Iceland

Iceland, Ranked 29th. 3 points for a win, but unlike many other countries no complicated changes of the championship formula and league size – the top 2 leagues had 10 teams each as usual. Three teams disputed the title and goal-difference decided the champion.
Vidir (Gardi) reigned supreme in the Second Division, winning it with 41 points. Breidablik clinched 2nd place with 32 points. Both teams were promoted up.
IA Akranes was the First Division outsider – last with 11 points. Thor lost the battle for survival, ending 9th with 15 points. These two were relegated.
The 1989 champion KA (Akureyri) was involved in bitter battle for survival, but managed to clinch 8th place with 16 points. Crouching frm left: Gauti Laxdal, Tomas (?) Hermansson, Arni Hermansson, Haukur Bragason, Egir Dagsson (?), Thordur Gudjonsson, Arnar Bjarnason, Helgi Johannsson. Top row: Gudjon Thordarson – coach, Orn Arnarson, Halldor Halldorsson, Jon Jonsson, Bjarni Jonsson, Kjartan Einarsson, Steingrimur Birgisson, Halldor Kristinsson, Heimir Gudjonsson (?), Hafsteinn Jakobson, Ormarr Orgilsson.
FH, which also did well in the previous season and earned a UEFA Cup spot, was not so good this year – 6th with 23 points.
IBV, KR, and Fram were the strong teams, keeping the thrill to the end. IBV finished 3rd with 37 points and the other two ended with 38 points. Goal-difference was in favour of Fram – KR (Reykjavik) got 2nd place.
Fram (Reykjavik) clinched first place after 12 wins, 2 ties and 4 losses, giving them 38 points. (KR finished with the same record and it came to goal-difference: KR ended with +14 (31-17) and Fram triumphed with +23 (39-16). Thus, Fram got its 18th title.
The Cup final also opposed Reykjavik rivals – KR again aimed for success and Valur. And like the championship, the Cup final was dramatic: it ended 1-1 after extra time and second match was scheduled. It ended 0-0 after extra time. The penalty shoot-out went in favour of Valur: 5-4. One can imagine the disappointment at the end of the season in the KR camp: so close and losing twice. And not exactly losing on the field.
Valur (Reykjavik) happily collected their 6th Cup. May be lucky, but winners.
