Cyprus

Cyprus. Ranked 27th. The usual leaders well above the rest, but also unequal and separated. A new trophy winner. Still 2 points for a win.
Second Division. 15 teams, the top 2 promoted and the last 3 relegated. Practically unknown clubs, like
Akritas (Chlorakas) – 11th with 26 points.
Former top league members were on top as usual.
APEP finished 2nd with 43 points and was promoted again to the top league.
EPA (Larnaca) won the championship with 45 points and went back to First Division.
First Division. One hopeless outsider and one very strong leader. Followed by the best known outside Cyprus club, which was much stronger than the rest of the league, but not a title contender this season.
Ethnikos was last with 10 points and Evagoras 13th with 19 points – both were relegated.
Nea Salamina barely escaped relegation – 10th with 22 points – yet, had arguably their best season ever.
Aris (Limassol) ended 4th with 30 points.
Pezoporikos clinched 3rd place with 31 points.
Omonia (Nicosia) was unreachable to those bellow, but… bellow the leading team too. 2nd with 36 points and the best goal-difference this season: +32. They also scored the most goals: 53.
APOEL (Nicosia) left everybody behind and dominating over their bitter rivals Omonia was particularly sweet – they won the championship with 41 points from 18 wins, 5 ties, 3 losses and 46-19 scoring record. This was their 14th title.
The Cup final opposed Omonia to Nea Salamina and looked like Omonia will have easy victory and compensate the lost championship with the other trophy. But… the underdog not only fought bravely, but managed to prevail 3-2.
Very disappointing season for Omonia (Nicosia) – second place was not for them, they ended with empty hands.
Nea Salamina (Famagusta) – surprise victors in the Cup final. Who would have thought – this club never won anything and had poor championship too, just trying to avoid relegation. But they won and proudly received the Cup for the first time. As always, Cypriot teams had anonymous players and their best were foreigners: in the case of Nea Salamina, the British players K. Dyer and N. McNeal. Enough for victory? Enough… The most memorable moment in the history of the club. Building dreams perhaps, but the reality of the moment was was to cherish and recall for years. Great success for one of the clubs in exile, not having real home for a long time, because home was in Northern Cyprus, the Turkish part separated by border to this very day.
